The landscape at Bundanon is often described as lyrical; reflected waters, mosaic carved ridges and rolling treelined parklands. It is a natural environment famously captured in Arthur Boyd’s late work.
The musicality of these vistas and the subsequent Shoalhaven paintings were the inspiration for a workshop led by composer Damian Barbeler, as a part of Bundanon’s 60+ Performance project in 2017. The workshop and its outcomes were captured in this video, Landscape Composing.
Responding to the landscape with pastels and paper, the group were taken through an interpretive musical score workshop, creating graphic scores transcribed into musical works by live musicians. Markings on paper became representations of musical gestures and parameters of sound, replacing traditional notes, rests, and bars.
